For beginners, we reviewed the opening worksheet from last week and then learned chess notation. This week's homework has you playing through three small chess games.
For those students that didn't have a chess board with numbers and letters on them, I handed out vinyl club boards. If you didn't receive one please let me know.
For advanced students, there's a worksheet of difficult mate-in-2 puzzles available here. But we tried something new in class that I'm interested in repeating. We went quickly thru the amazing game Baadur Jobava vs Ruslan Ponomariov at the 2016 Olympiad, guessing at the intention of moves and noting moves that confused us. Then we compared our notes to an expert's review. There are a few chess youtube personalities that I think explain things at a perfect level of clarity and pace: Daniel King (powerplaychess), Jerry (chessnetwork) and John Bartholomew (John Bartholomew).
